He stood at the fence, peering through the gaps in the barbed wire fence. A little boy, three to four years old.
His gaze was fixed on a cow grazing lazily in the shade of an old tree in the meadow. Not close enough to touch her, he pointed through the wire and suddenly turned toward his parents, his face glowing with sheer wonder.
Oh, the joy of discovery.
For one small moment in time, a cow and a tree—rather ordinary sights in the English countryside—had captured a little boy’s attention and they became something extraordinary. Objects of fascination. Such a delightful scene.
Perhaps this was his first encounter with such a pairing.
Little did he know it would not be his last meeting with the cow and the tree. Nor could he possibly have understood the significance they might one day have in his life. He certainly couldn’t have known that the cow and the tree were old friends.
Maybe they had spent years together in that quiet pasture, one offering shelter while the other gratefully rested beneath its branches. Through blazing summer afternoons and passing rain showers, they had shared the peace of an open field.
The tree spent its life giving. Shade and shelter, a place for birds to nest. Branches for swings. Leaves that fell and enriched the earth beneath it. And even at the end of its life, its wood could continue giving—in the form of warmth, furniture, tools, and so much more.
The cow provided too. Nourishment for families in the way of milk, cream, butter, and ultimately, even its hide would be generously repurposed.
I know this all sounds a little odd, and by now you may be wondering, What in the world does any of this have to do with baseball? Bear with me.
The years have passed in what seems like a blink of the eye, and I can’t help but smile as I sit in the bleachers on this hot summer day and hear that familiar sound—CRACK! A wooden bat meets a leather-covered ball. The little boy─my grandson─who once stood so enthralled by the cow and the shady tree, has grown tall and strong, with a passion for the game of baseball.
And suddenly, there they are again! The boy. The cow. The tree. Together again—this time on a baseball diamond. Oh, how things change.
From a tree, a wooden bat is fashioned. From a cowhide, the leather covering of a baseball is crafted. And from a little boy, a young man of character is also being fashioned—shaped over time by parents, coaches, teachers and mentors, and ultimately by the hand of God.
Perhaps that is what makes me smile as I sit here listening to the crack of wood against leather. Life has a remarkable way of bringing seemingly unrelated things together.
A cow in a meadow. An old tree offering shade. A little boy gazing through a fence in wonder. Who could possibly have imagined where their paths might lead?
I find myself marveling at how beautiful life is—and how wonderfully interconnected we are with the natural world around us. I wonder if there is a lesson tucked inside this little rambling of mine?
Perhaps it’s to keep noticing our surroundings. To always wonder at the simple and ordinary. To dig deeper into the meaning of life. To never become so accustomed to the ordinary that we fail to recognize the extraordinary hiding within it. To understand.
Because sometimes a cow is more than a cow. A tree is more than a tree.
And baseball is so much more than a game.
“He has made everything beautiful in its time.” ─Ecclesiastes 3-11
